Coastal Discovery Museum
The Coastal Discovery Museum is “one of the most memorable destinations on Hilton Head Island.” With its historic and scenic location on vast, winding grounds at the island’s entrance, the Museum is home to various programs and opportunities, educational and community resources, and hometown events. This Museum was founded in 1985 and operated at two previous locations before making a giant leap forward in the Fall of 2007 when it opened the facility at Honey Horn. Since relocating, the Museum has expanded its offerings, doubled the number of students in education programs, and hosted dozens of special events and festivals annually.
In summer, you can experience the butterfly habitat, but it’s still worth a visit if you come in the off-season to see the camellia garden in bloom in winter. Some oak trees are over 300 years old and covered with Spanish moss. And there is a small gift shop if you want to buy a souvenir.
Coastal Discovery Museum has a great educational program for children. The Discovery lab is hands-on for the kids. Children can learn the life cycles and explore the native live animals like alligators and an unusually active welk. You can also look through microscopes at the many slides they had prepared and learn facts from the volunteers. Learn More about Adventure Hilton Head here.
